COSI & Valentine's Day

Last week, the students visited COSI in our gym! They had a blast learning about the needs of living things, habitats, and animal adaptations.

This week in phonics we learned the sound of long i spelled with igh (sigh), y (fly), and ie (pie). Our High Frequency Words were: caught, flew, know, laugh, listen, were. We focused on insects while reading: Creep Low Fly High, Hi Fly Guy, Meet the Insects, and Fly Guy's Amazing Tricks.  The students learned all about insects, invented a new bug, and used descriptive words to write about their new insect. We learned how labels help a reader understand the information more clearly and labeled our insects.

In math, we continue to use models and strategies to add tens and ones. We drew longs and cubes and used a hundred's chart to find the sum of two digit numbers. The children learned a short cut to add tens: slide their finger down on the hundred's chart.

In social studies, we began our unit on Map Skills. We talked about the compass rose and North, South, East, West. We have explored the continents of the world, states in the US, and discussed our state and city. These were favorite songs from class that your child can view at home:
