Read Across America Week

High School Students from The National Honors Society came to our class to read for Read Across America Week

We practiced adding tens and ones with tasty treats!

In reading this week, we focused on reading stories with the theme: How we can classify and categorize things to help us stay organized. Our stories were: A Barn Full of Hats, A Lost Button, Sort It Out and The Party. The phonics focus was "ar" as in star. We learned that r is SO bossy, we don;t even hear the a sound in: star, far, car, etc. The HFWrods were: four, large, only, put, round, none.

In math this week, we finished up adding with tens and ones. We solved story problems with double digit addition by drawing models. We always say: circle it to make a ten! On Friday, we added double digit numbers with pretzels and marshmallows. The treats are coming home today with more math facts inside the bag to practice at home this weekend!

For read across america week, our class heard SO many Dr. Seuss books. They enjoyed the rhyming words and silly stories. We saw a video about Dr. Seuss and answered questions about his writing.

Conference Sign Ups

Students work in different  centers everyday. This group is reading books on Raz-Kids. Remember to log into Raz-Kids at home too! Their passwords are on the back of their folders.

In phonics this week, we learned the lone e sound of y (puppy) and ey (key). The students learned the HFWords found, hard, near, woman, would, write. Our essential questions was: How do people work with animals? These are the stories we read: Saving Mountain Gorillas, Koko and Penny, and From Puppy to Guide Dog. We focused on sequencing stories (first, next, then, last) and finding the main ideas. I showed the children the National Geographic Kids website about animal research. A few asked for the link. Feel free to browse Nat Geo Kids at home! https://kids.nationalgeographic.com/

In math, we learned to draw models of two digit numbers to add. We even worked on the beginning steps of carrying by saying "circle it to make a ten." If there were 10 or more cubes, we circle the ten and carry that number into the tens place, Have your child show you at home! Can they do these math facts: 57 + 24, 62 +49.

From Avon Lake Police Officer Brian Hurd:
There has been an ongoing problem in front of Redwood Elementary in regards to the pick up at the end of the day.  Traffic is getting backed up causing issues for parents that are trying to make a left turn into Redwood’s parking lot from Redwood Blvd.  There are a lot of students from the high school that travel this way and other residents that live in the area however do not pick up at the school.  In moving forward to correct this problem, we need your assistance.  Please travel north on Moorewood Ave. and make a right turn on to Redwood Blvd. in order to make a right turn on to the school property.  By doing this, we will alleviate westbound traffic going through and will not be impeded.
Please note that Officer's from the Avon Lake Police Department will be patrolling the area more regularly over the next few weeks in order to enforce this.  Thank you for your understanding as we attempt to change the traffic pattern during dismissal.

COSI & Valentine's Day

Last week, the students visited COSI in our gym! They had a blast learning about the needs of living things, habitats, and animal adaptations.

This week in phonics we learned the sound of long i spelled with igh (sigh), y (fly), and ie (pie). Our High Frequency Words were: caught, flew, know, laugh, listen, were. We focused on insects while reading: Creep Low Fly High, Hi Fly Guy, Meet the Insects, and Fly Guy's Amazing Tricks.  The students learned all about insects, invented a new bug, and used descriptive words to write about their new insect. We learned how labels help a reader understand the information more clearly and labeled our insects.

In math, we continue to use models and strategies to add tens and ones. We drew longs and cubes and used a hundred's chart to find the sum of two digit numbers. The children learned a short cut to add tens: slide their finger down on the hundred's chart.

In social studies, we began our unit on Map Skills. We talked about the compass rose and North, South, East, West. We have explored the continents of the world, states in the US, and discussed our state and city. These were favorite songs from class that your child can view at home:
Check out the pictures below to see the children passing out Valentines to their friends!
