100th Day of School!

Happy 100th Day of School! This week in reading we focused on how animals survive in nature. We read the stories Go Wild, Fantastic Fish, and Vulture View.  The children worked on finding the main idea and supporting details of the text. We learned the high frequency words: find, food, more, over, start, warm. Our phonics sound was long o: oe( like toe), ow (like crow), and oa (like coat). In math, we learned "greater than, less than, and equal to" and how to use their symbols: >,<,=. For writing this week, the students were given a $100 bill with their picture on it! The students wrote in their journals what they would do with the $100. On Friday, we had an assembly to wrap up The Great Kindness Challenge. It was amazing to see and hear all of the acts of kindness the students showed all week long!
Next week:
Wednesday: COSI
Friday: Glow Night! Pre-sale tickets will be passed out next week. Tickets are still available at the door!
~Remember to work on Valentine Mailboxes or Bags and bring them to school when completed!

Friday Fun!

In reading this week, our focus was finding the main idea and supporting details in a story. We read Busy as a Bee, Animal Teams, and A Team of Fish. The main idea of each story was: Animals working together in teams. We learned the ee and ea vowel teams as in "seed" and "leaf." Our new High Frequency Words were: because, blue, into, or, other, small.

For math, we finished topic 8: Place Value and took the quiz today. Next week we will focus on comparing two digit numbers on a hundreds chart and by using symbols.

We continue to read more complex stories together and independently. The children completed their own animal reports with a partner. Soon, the goal is to be able to read the book and complete the recording sheet independently!

100th day- Friday, January 31st- Wear Red for the 100th day of school.

Valentine's Day:
On February 13th, the children will be passing out Valentines during school. We have no school February 14th because of a staff in-service day.

1. Make A Mailbox @ Home
Please use a large shoebox or other box/ bag to make a Valentine’s Day mailbox together with your child at home! Spend some quality time together and be creative. Make the opening large enough for cards & candy to fit.  In years past, kids have made the lid detachable to open and close, so the child doesn’t have to rip open the box to get the cards out.
2. Write Out Valentines
Use the class list (came home Friday) to write names on Valentine cards. Attaching candy or small toys to the cards is allowed. Remember to include everyone! We will not be eating anything at school, everything will be sent home.

3. Bring Both to School When Completed, by February 13th. Earlier is fine too

Field Trip Fun!

This week in phonics we focused on the vowel teams: ai (like rain) and ay (like say). We worked on writing words with these vowel teams on dry erase boards. Our new High Frequency Words were: about, animal, carry, eight, give, our. A new High Frequency Word List will came home in folders this Friday.

In reading, our essential questions was: How do animals' bodies help them? We read the folktales A Tail of A Tail and How Bat Got His Wings. Using those stories, we focused on sequencing a story by re-telling it using the words first, next, then, and last. As you read stories before bed, see if your child can retell the storybok using those sequence words. The non-fiction story this week was Bats! Bats! Bats! Then, we practiced taking facts from the text to complete an animal research report about Bats. Soon, the students will be able to read a nonfiction book and complete these reports on their own!

In math, we began topic 8: Place Value. The students worked with longs (worth 10) and cubes (worth one) to model, draw, and reason with place value. They were asked to answer how many groups of tens and how many ones were used in a given drawing or number.

In science, we continue to learn about solids, liquids, and gases. Our field trip to ALPL was a success and they learned new vocabulary words such as: matter, dissolve, transparent, viscus, and dry ice. Check out the pictures below of how they used dry ice to create ghost bubbles!

Happy New Year!

It's been great getting to know the students so far! This week we completed "About Me" posters so I could learn all of their favorite things. Then we made New Years goals and made new years party hats, too. Wednesday we had a penguin day where we read about penguins, did penguin math, and wrote our favorite facts about penguins. In science, we started our unit on solids, liquids, and gases. We learned new vocabulary words: viscus, transparent, and translucent.

Welcome Back!

Hello Families!
Welcome back to school and Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a great winter break and that you were able to have quality family time together. I am glad to be back in the classroom to finish out the reminder of the school year with your children. Please check this website weekly for important information, upcoming dates, and academic topics covered during the week. I typically update the information every Friday afternoon.

Field Trip Chaperones Needed: We are going to Avon Lake Public Library on Wednesday, January 15th from 1:15-2:45. I am looking for 5 chaperones to meet us at the library. Please email me at Kimberly.kozar@avonlakecityschools.org if you are interested. I will confirm back with you the final details, as I can only take 5!

At Home:

  • Math HW: Please continue to return math homework to school by Friday! As we progress towards second grade, you will find math homework coming home more frequently, about 2-3 times per week depending on the math lesson taught that day.
  • Raz-Kids: Read books on Raz-Kids at least once per week. Check the back of your child's folder for Raz-Kids login information. This is an awesome resource to build reading fluency and comprehension. Each student is given different books depending on their individual reading needs. Logging in once per week is recommended, but please feel free to have your child login more often if you choose!
  • Mini Paper Books: Occasionally, we make and read small paper books in class. These typically correlate with the phonics skill we're learning that week. When we're done, they are sent home. Please have your child reread these books to you and then store them in a bag or safe place so they can be read again with you or independently!
Yoga Wednesdays: We will begin having Yoga during the recess periods on Wednesday's beginning on January 8th.  The form is here:Yoga Waiver.docx and will also be available in the office for those interested in participating. If your child is interested in participating in yoga on Wednesdays, please return the form to school.

Older siblings must pick up younger siblings and go to the southwest exit (between cafeteria and music room). Please be very specific about what your child should do at dismissal. For example: meet me at the flag pole, sit with your brother on the bench outside the gym, look for our car as I pull around the circle. Please be patient the first couple of weeks with dismissal.

We will keep track of cumulative miles walked after each club meeting. These miles will take us on a visit to many interesting places throughout the world that we will speak of in class. Interesting facts will be shared with students over the morning announcements.
