Field Trip Fun!

This week in phonics we focused on the vowel teams: ai (like rain) and ay (like say). We worked on writing words with these vowel teams on dry erase boards. Our new High Frequency Words were: about, animal, carry, eight, give, our. A new High Frequency Word List will came home in folders this Friday.

In reading, our essential questions was: How do animals' bodies help them? We read the folktales A Tail of A Tail and How Bat Got His Wings. Using those stories, we focused on sequencing a story by re-telling it using the words first, next, then, and last. As you read stories before bed, see if your child can retell the storybok using those sequence words. The non-fiction story this week was Bats! Bats! Bats! Then, we practiced taking facts from the text to complete an animal research report about Bats. Soon, the students will be able to read a nonfiction book and complete these reports on their own!

In math, we began topic 8: Place Value. The students worked with longs (worth 10) and cubes (worth one) to model, draw, and reason with place value. They were asked to answer how many groups of tens and how many ones were used in a given drawing or number.

In science, we continue to learn about solids, liquids, and gases. Our field trip to ALPL was a success and they learned new vocabulary words such as: matter, dissolve, transparent, viscus, and dry ice. Check out the pictures below of how they used dry ice to create ghost bubbles!
